The Department of Philosophy at The University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver Campus invites applications for the position ofCanada Research Chair (Tier I) in Philosophy of the Social and Historical Sciences. The Chair position is expected to be a full-time tenured appointment made at the rank of Professor in the Department of Philosophy. The successful applicant will be a leading and internationally recognized scholar, whose profile and research proposal demonstrate an excellent fit with CRC program criteria and the aims of the position. The Chair will be expected to maintain an outstanding program of research, to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, to supervise undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows, and to contribute to service at the departmental level and beyond.
The CRC in Philosophy of the Social and Historical Sciences will join the Faculty of Arts, home to 24 Canada Research Chairs across a wide range of humanities and social science units, and the UBC Philosophy Department. The department’s research cluster in the philosophy of science already covers some areas of social science (especially economics and cognitive science), as well as historical sciences such as evolutionary biology. This CRC position is expected to broaden and deepen these strengths and to further interdisciplinary linkages through engagement with social and historical science departments at UBC, participation in the Science and Technology Studies Graduate Program in the Faculty of Arts, and engagement with interdisciplinary units on campus such as the W. Maurice Young Centre for Applied Ethics and the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies. Feminist philosophy would also be an asset.
The Canada Research Chairs Program supports outstanding researchers in areas that will further the institution’s strategic research plan. All Chair nominations are subject to review and final approval by the CRC Secretariat. To meet the criteria of the CRC program, Tier I nominees must: be outstanding and innovative world-class researchers whose accomplishments have made a major impact in their fields; be recognized internationally as leaders in their fields; have superior records of attracting and supervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows (taking into account different practices in the relevant field or discipline); propose an original, innovative research program of the highest quality; and, as chair holders, be expected to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers. Nominees for Tier I positions must be full professors (or associate professors who are expected to be promoted to the full professor level within one or two years of the nomination).
